From the Scotsman's review of the first edition

The general value of the book is undoubted... and it should form the vade mecum (Handbook) for all those connected with the subjects.

The textbook ran to 13 editions and was amended over the years, as was the title. A review of the textbook in 1938 in the Canadian Medical Association Journal commends it as achieving a ‘notable position among works of its kind in Britain and the Empire’, and says that it maintains the high standard of previous editions as the physicians’ medico-legal guide. In 1949, the textbook was still in print and won the Swinney Prize for the best current publication on jurisprudence.
